It could go for either gender imo, but if I had to pick one I'd say for a girl. As for spelling I'd go more for Sidney, just because the y instead of i name thing bugs me.

Sidney with an I is masculine. Sydney with a y is mainly used for girls. But to be honest both have a masculine sound. Why would a girl wanna be called Sid?
