Cataleya vs. Cattleya
We are expecting our first child, a girl, and this is the name my husband and I have chosen, it is set in stone as it is the one name that we can both agree on and are both in love with for our baby.
We are torn on spelling though. We like Cataleya, pronounced kah-tah-LAY-ah (like the name of Zoe Saldana's character in the movie Colombiana).
However Cataleya is a play of spelling on Cattleya (catt-le-ya), which is a genus of orchids, and I am usually a stickler for correct spelling.
We are also after middle name suggestions. Our girl will likely have dark brown hair, blue or green eyes and olive skin.
Thank you for your help all, we much appreciate having outside input.

I'd spell it how you want it pronounced, however with Cattleya, I immediately see Cattle, which might be a problem.
Jade would be a pretty middle name.
I'm typically all for the original spelling, but in this case I voted for Cataleya. I also see the word cattle prominently in the original spelling and that doesn't seem like a great thing in a child's name.

Thanks cigi and JandC, I too noticed cattle in the original spelling, so it is good to know you two saw it as well.
We were leaning towards Cataleya, I was just worried about incorrect spelling because I dislike when people spell names like Madison as Madisyn for example (no offence anyone, personal preference).

Cataleya (with this spelling) is surprisingly common in the US right now, at least among very young children. It entered the popularity charts for the first time in 2011 and rocketed upward immediately. As of 2018, it was the 480th most popular girl name in the US. That's insanely fast to go from obscurity to the top 500 in 7 years. If we ever get the 2019 numbers out, it will be interesting to see where it's at more recently.
The Cattleya spelling came onto the popularity charts at the same time and also rose, but is much less common. It's the 1,789th most popular girl name as of 2018.
Did that movie you're talking about come out in 2011? I can't think of any other reason why both spellings would suddenly pop onto the charts then.
Personally I'd go with Cataleya. It's just prettier, imo, and if this name continues to climb the charts, it's better to use the more common spelling. Less of a pain in the butt for her if she doesn't have to constantly correct other people's spelling of her name.
