Winona vs. Thoughts?
Have just started my baby naming process. I came across this name in a poll yesterday and I thought it was beautiful! Do you think it's a little wild though? Again, open to suggestions since we're still just starting. We don't like common names but we're open to feminine and unisex names as well.
The Top Baby Name is...
Winona
Thoughts?

Winona is nice. I don't know why it would be considered wild.

It's lovely and not wild. It is, however, of Sioux Dakota origin and that makes me personally uncomfortable. I have mixed feelings about appropriating names from a different culture. It feels a little disrespectful.

I immediately think Winona Judd the country singer. Nothing really wild about Winona, it's a little dated.

Oh! I wasn't aware of that at all. I just saw the name and created a poll without researching anything. Thank you so very much for bringing this to my notice. I completely agree with you about how this could be cultural appropriation. - OP

I did seen Winry, I think I spelled that correctly, on a poll the other day. That name might interest you too!

I always have difficulty figuring out where the line between avoiding cultural appropriation and being racist is. In both cases a person shuns things having to do with cultures other than their own. I realize that the underlying sentiment is the opposite with each of these, but the effect is the same. We keep away from other cultures' ideas, customs, names, fashions, etc. Separate but equal appears to be back in style.
The isn't a comment on the posters here, just a frustrated rant about the end result of the whole avoiding cultural appropriation thing. Everybody in their own little box, keeping to their own place and never mixing too much with other cultures in any but the most superficial ways.

I named my daughter Wynona which is a Lakota name meaning first born daughter. I'm not from the Lakota tribe and I don't care. I will name my kids whatever the **** I want. You don't like it? Tough ****.
