Barnabas means son of encouragement. He assisted the disciples and traveled with the apostle Paul on some of his journeys.
I forget which Northern European culture this is from, but adding the suffix -dottir for daughter at the end of the father's name is the surname for a girl. Don't know that it would work for a first name though. I think in Russian the suffix is -ovna. I can't say I know any girl names that mean daughter of, but there are some unisex ones like Addison, Allison, Madison, etc.

And how could I forget, especially on St. Patrick's day, that names that start with O' mean 'son of'. Examples: O'Brien, O'Reilly.
