I like both a lot. Ezra is definitely the more popular of the two, if that matters to you. Amos is another favorite with a similar feel.

I voted for Ezra -- I do like both though!

If 'able' wasn't a word I would like Abel more. I like how Abel phonetically sounds, but it hits me funny because my brain leaps to the adjective 'able.'

My ears hears 'Abel' and my subconscious brain thinks: 'Able? Like the adjective? That's unusual. If a name overlaps with an English word they are usually nouns - Rose, Opal, Dawn, etc. Am I sure Able isn't a noun? No, it's definitely an adjective. An adjective as a name. Huh, that's different.'

And my conscious is cluelessly thinking: 'That name strikes me as funny, but I don't know why.'

^^^ I don't know if my ramblings made sense lol. Even if someone associates 'Abel' with able / ability it's not a bad association!!! And I really do like how Abel sounds :) And it would only strike me as funny at first, and then I would quickly get used to it.

I do prefer names that aren't as common, but I love Ezra so much I kind of don't mind how popular it is, I've loved it forever. Usually it's a big factor for me though. I can't find anything similar that gives me that same feeling as Ezra besides Abel & Lucian (loo-shun), but my husband doesn't like Lucian. I also don't really care for it with our surname, Thompson.

I see what you're saying how it would first strike some people. My husband and I can't fully agree on anything, except Abel. I really like Ezra, but he's on the fence because he thinks it's sounds feminine. I think that may be because the "a" at the end and our daughters name ends with an "a".

I completely agree that it's difficult to find names that have the ***same*** feel as Ezra and Abel!!!

May I suggest some names that have a ***similar*** feel?

Suggestions:
Abram
Edmund
Zachariah
Saul
Emmanuel
Jonah
Truman
Hershel
Roger
Asa
Xander / Zander
Wilfred / Wilford
Eamon (pronounced AY-mon)
Cassian (cass-ee-en OR cash-en) or Cassius (cass-ee-us OR cash-us)
Anthony has a similar-ish feel to me IF it's pronounced the British way: Antony
Lorenzo with the nickname 'Enzo' (my thinking is that Enzo is a bit like Ezra) ???

For an even better fit than Lorenzo: Vincenzo with the nickname Enzo?

I love Abram, Edmund and Jonah! I'd really like Zachariah but don't like the nickname Zach. I love the nickname Abe that comes with Abram though, which was something I love about Abel too. Thank you!

I have a friend whose son's name is Thomas Abel but they call him Abel and I think it's just adorable. He's 4.
