boy name vs. honoring vs. Wendell

My husband would like to honor his great grandfather Wendell (Win-dell) who he looked up to his whole life. I'm definitely open to it, but I do not like the name itself. I think for a girl we have decided on Wynn/Wyn or Della for a first or middle name. For a boy, we are quite lost. I would be fine with it as his middle name, but in my family, the first born boy has had the middle name John for quite sometime. Would it be weird for a boy to have the two middle names Wendell John? We're open to any and all thoughts, as well as first name suggestions for a boy and a girl (if we use Wynn or Della as her middle name). We prefer more uncommon names. Thanks! -C+M

I personally think two middle names is perfectly fine and Wendell John sound great together. Another option honestly is picking any name that starts with W to honour Wendell. It's the thought and the meaning behind it - the name doesn't have to match exactly.

William, Weston, Wesley etc. would all work. Delvin is another idea.

Other options are if you know Wendell's middle name you may be able to use that.

Wyn(n) and Della are both darling. You cannot go wrong with either to honor Windell. I would love to see either used as a first name. For a boy, I see your issue. There are not any great options that come from Windell, unless you're open to using Wyn or Dell for a boy (even as a middle name). I could see Dallen or Dillon working, but they are quite a stretch. Wells could work. I think your best option is using Windell John as his middle names (nothing wrong with two!).

Turner Windell John
Thatcher Windell John
Beckett Windell John
Dexter Windell John
Merritt Windell John
Rhodes Windell John
Callahan Windell John
Rhett Windell John
Seth Windell John
Camden Windell John

Lilia Wynn
Sage Della
Morrigan Della
Ember Wynn
Naomi Della
Ansley Della
Wynn Cordelia
Della Marigold
Wynn Gabrielle
Della Vivienne

Second thought, you could use Ellis, Ellison or Elliott to honor Windell as well.

Wendell John sounds handsome to me. And Della is darling! Some other options just in case:
Winston
Dillon
Wells
Wendy
Wanda
Delta
Winona
Also, the name Wendell means traveler. Some boy and girl names the have similar meaning:
Faer (traveler, preacher of good news)
Kymani (adventurous traveler)
Scott (traveler)
Christopher (patron saint of travelers)
Stian (wanderer)
Doran (wanderer)
Farrah (traveler)
Saira (traveler)

Guest, thank you for your thoughts. We haven't thought about just using a W name, but it's not a bad option. I guess I think it might lose its honor (I'll have to see what my husband thinks). I do like the name Weston though.

Mak, thank you. I actually really adore Wells. Why hadn't we thought about that? Dallen is an interesting way to honor Windell, but I like it as well. I also really like Thatcher, Merritt, and Callahan. Lilia, Ansley, Della Marigold and Della Vivienne are super sweet. Oh, Ellis is a great option as well. I love that. Thanks!

Guest, I like Winston! I like the option of using a name with a similar meaning, but not sure what my husband will think. Doran is cute. Thanks!

I think I've seen guys with the name Dell or Del before. That could be a short form of Wendell for a boy.

Use Wendell John as 2 middle names. It will keep the full name and direct connection to your husband's great grandfather, and keep the John connection to your family too. Then you guys can pick a first name you love for daily use.
I really like Della as either first or middle. Wynn I prefer as a middle name.

I'm assuming you don't like Wendy for a girl? That would be the closest to Wendell.

Tracy, I don't mind Dell on a boy, but hubby isn't a fan unfortunately. Thank you.

I, I really adore Waylon, Winslow and Wilson. Wynn Adela, Hazel and Elsie are lovely. Thanks!

Guest, that's my thoughts as well unless we did find something we were in love with. I do really like some of these suggestions, so we'll see! Thanks!

Guest, Wendy is a no go. I think its a little old fashioned and I have known a couple Wendy's that have ruined the name for me. Thanks though!

The feminine form of Wendell is Vendela ("VEN-deh-luh"), a Scandinavian girl's name. It all comes from the root "wend" meaning to wander / meander.

I'd use Wendell John as middle names for a boy and Vendela Jane for the girl's. Good luck! :0)

P.S. What was Grandpa Wendell's middle name, if any? :0)

I think I'd use Wendell John as the two middle names if I were you. I have heard Wynn as a boy name more than a girl name. It's cute. Della is really cute too.

Freda Cat, Wendell's middle name was George. Not something we would like to go with. Vendela is a cool option, but I think we've settled on Wynn or Della to honor him in a girl's name. Thanks!

4KidMom, Wyn for a boy is an option we would consider, but I don't think we love it for a first name. Thanks!

Fair enough. Thanks for responding so much. Makes this funner for us.

Della is beautiful.

If you are using two middles for a boy (Wendell John) then I'd use two for a girl. Della Jane / Jean / Jeanette / Siobhan / Sian ("shahn")? :0)
