Many to most Archers will go by Archie at some point. Many people choose Archer to have something besides a nickname to put on the birth certificate when they plan to call him Archie, and Archibald just doesn't appeal.
That said there are some who mo doubt use the name in full.
Still, you can only control the nickname situation as long as the child lets you. Sooner or later he will decide for himself whether he wants to use the nickname.

If you hate the nickname Archie and never want him to use it, avoid Archer. If you prefer Archer but don't mind hearing others call him Archie at some point, go for it.

It can be avoid if you tell people no to the nickname

^ it can be avoided at the toddler stage but unless someone follows there child to school and forbids anyone from using it or the child from requesting it then no it can't.
