Madeline vs. Madeline

My husband is really stuck on the name Madeline, we say it mad-uh-line if that matters. I do really find the name Madeline adorable but the name Maddie just seems to be everywhere right now. Do you think popularity matters? I usually like uncommon names but it has started growing on me. What do you think of the name Madeline? Do any other similar names in style come to mind which are maybe less used? Ty!!!!

I'm with you. I love Madeline and this pronunciation especially but I have never gotten over Maddie being so dang common. I know so many and its just so overused as a nickname. However, if you could get another nickname to stick, I say go for it. I know you can't control what she'll want to be called, but if you love the name Madeline, its worth it. I personally adore Della, Dell or Addie as a nickname.

You might like:

Adelaide
Emmeline
Magdalene
Coraline
Adeline
Aveline

Madeline is lovely. If it's grown roots in your heart and is *the* name then its popularity shouldn't matter. With so many parents looking for different / unique names the overall pool of names is much bigger now.
So being in the top (___) isn't what it used to be. You could use nn Del too.

You might also like: Maddalena, Magdalene, Magdalena, Magda, Malin ("mah-LIN"), Marceline, Morgane, Maxine, Morrigan ("mor-REE-gun"), Mairwen, Maureen, or Marjolaine. Good luck! :0)

Madeline is a fantastic name! It is timeless and classic. I personally prefer Madeleine, but there is nothing objectively wrong with Madeline at all. Plus, you do not have to use the nickname Maddie. I love, love the suggestion of Del and Della. Even Ellie works!

I do find it very very common, but if you love it it's a petty name. I would probably go with Adeline myself, similar sound less common and gorgeous name!

I teach preschool and we have a little Madeline. She doesn't go by a nickname at all. It's a really cute name.

If you absolutely LOVE the name Madeline, regardless of how popular it is USE IT! If you do not use it, you may regret it. I wanted Isabella for my first baby in the worst way. Everyone said it was too popular, so I went with another name. Then came another baby and I decided I'd use Isabella for my next girl because I regretted not using it for my first daughter. Only issue is my second, third and my final baby that I am carrying right are/were all boys. I SO, SO wish I'd have used Isabella. If you LOVE Madeline, my advice is use it. It's currently barely in the top 100. While Ellie is popular, my friend has a daughter Madeleine (a bit different pronunciation) and she calls her Ellie for short instead of Maddie. Good luck!

Its a very pretty name, but too popular for me personally.
Maddie is almost inevitable, is that a dealbreaker for you?

I like Madeline but dislike Maddie. If you don't want her to be called Maddie, I wouldn't use Madeline (as a first name). But if you love it and are concerned only about popularity, I wouldn't overly worry about that. I only know 1 Maddie under 20.

If it's a name you love, use it. Madeline is adorable but there definitely is a chance Maddie will come into play, either by your daughter herself or her peers. If people say it's boring or too common then they have bigger things to worry about. I never understood that.

I don't think it'll be popular by the time your child hits school, but then again that's completely regional and based on your location. Parents nowadays are looking for the same thing you are, uncommon & unique names for their child, so there will probably be limited Madeline's cause of the "Maddie" association, which people think is 'boring' nowadays.

I think people will call her what you call her. My daughter is Amanda, no one calls her Mandy.

I'm Madeline! My nickname growing up was Mad (short for Madeline). I always loved names like Debbie, Kathy, Cindy, even Gracie (my sisters name). Then the name Madison got popular with the nickname Maddie. I thought I could have been Maddie! Why didn't they call me Maddie? But now that Maddie is so popular I love Mad!! I love my name (pronounced mad-uh-lin). Thanks Mom 💕
