Soyer vs. Sawyer
Help! I love Sawyer pronounces Soyer. But where I live everyone says saw-yer. Would it be awful to spell it Soyer? Its for a girl and her name will be Sawyer/Soyer Jean. Any other suggestions?

Depends where you live tbh. I never saw the Soyer spelling so Sawyer looks better to me but since you're using it for a girl I think you can do it. Changing the spellings of names is more common and accepted with girl names imo.

I live in West Virginia. I prefer Sawyer but if spelling it Soyer helps I don't mind that spelling. My name is pronounced wrong and I thought it was a very simple name. It's Haley like Hay-lee but im constantly called Hal-lee

I'm on the fence about this. My question is, would it actually help with the pronunciation? I don't think the 2 pronunciations you are talking about are different enough that the people who are saying it "wrong" even realize that they are saying it differently at all. I think it probably seems like the same thing to them, so when they see or hear "soyer," they will still mentally process it as Sawyer and say it how they always do. I guess the change in spelling would just help when you correct them, you could point out that it is soy, not saw. I think you will still have to do a lot of correcting, though, because people just won't realize.

"Sowyer" makes no sense phonetically. And a sawyer is someone who saws timber for a living. Not someone who "soys". Whatever that is. Soyer is a completely different "word". If it's even a word. But if that's the pronunciation you want, I'd spell it that way. I'd never pronounce Sawyer as soyer.

I think because of where you live people will say it wrong no matter what. I am from the US and a friend of mine loves the way Americans say Aaron so chose that knowing they say it slightly different in the UK. Even with corrections people still say it the way she doesn't care for because of location.
I much prefer Sawyer however Soyer may be a way to solve the problem when reading the name. It does look like a name. I'd take into consideration her being nicknamed Soy Milk or Soy Bean etc... in school but I don't think Soyer is much different from people naming their kids Saylor/Sailor.

Where I live it is pronounced Soyer. I would spell the name correctly. If ocassional mispronunciation drives you nuts then this is not the name for you. Find one that won't be mispronounced. She already has a bnog which will cause problems on written forms . You don't need to give her the added headache of everyone misspelling it too. I consider Sawyer a boy's name and not a unisex one.

Ignore the person above. It's a surname so it's unisex and most people know it's unisex it's not like James or George. I would spell it Sawyer and correct people, the issue seems to be the dialect and not the spelling so I don't think spelling it diffrent will solve it

I would think that most people would be able to get the hang of it especially because of Tom Sawyer. You might have to correct them once but I don't think it's the big of a deal.

I'm in the US. I've noticed a difference in how people say the words sawyer and lawyer, depending where you are. My Midwest relatives say saw-yer while my East Coast relatives say soy-er. There's definitely a difference, though to some it may be subtle. You might be better off with Jean Sawyer.

The fact is it's a masculine occupation name, if you also want to say it wrong, it's just Another headache for the child, best to keep looking.

I have a daughter named Sawyer. I live in the south. Drives me nuts to hear soy but I agree it's a regional thing. She gets her name pronounced both ways and couldn't care less. She even introduces herself both ways depending on the mood, LOL. Also, I probably pronounce it more like sah-yer instead of a drawn out "saw".
