Alexis vs. unisex name
I've always loved the name Alexis, and I find it so cool. I know that this name became increasingly popular for girls in the 1990s-2000s...but it was a "boy name" before. I plan to name my kid Alexis, regardless of gender. I don't mind if my son were to have a "girl name". What are your thoughts?
The Top Baby Name is...
Alexis
unisex name

I think it might be common for a boy in Russia.

When I think of a boy named Alexis, I think of the Russian Grand Duke and multiple male saints.
When I think of a girl named Alexis, I think of the character on the TV show Dynasty.
I prefer it on a boy myself. In France, the "s" at the end is not pronounced. I like the French pronunciation as well as the English.

Actually, Alexis is still in the top 500 for both boys and girls. I was surprised. It's #472 for boys and #341 for girls, so while not equal usage, it isn't too far off. In 2021 629 boys were named Alexis and 940 girls were named Alexis. Not my ideal name for a boy, but not my baby. While I am not sure if this is real, before I looked it up, I had cringed when you said that you don't mind if your son has a girl name. He might though.

I have no idea why people post stuff like this. You've already made the comment that you don't care that it's a "girl name" so why ask others what they think?
Based on how you worded things I also don't think you're pregnant, probably just know how stupid at gatekeepy people on this site are about unisex names and deaided it would be entertaining to watch people argue.

Tbf it's safe to assume that you aren't going to change your mind so why post this? I do want to add though that it's not about if YOU would mind it's about if HE would mind. Why don't parents seem to grasp that?

@Guest Actually, I'm a newcomer to this site. I'm 6 months pregnant, and I want the gender of my baby to be a surprise. I was curious to know other people's reaction to if I named my son Alexis, so I posted this poll. Honest, I had no idea about the people on this site, but a friend gave good reviews. I was open to opinions; hence why I asked, "What are your thoughts?".

I really like Alexis on a boy, and hate it on a girl. Same with Sasha.

Outside of America, Alexis is still definitely a unisex or boy name, but if you're going to name him that in America, I'd give him a very masculine sounding middle name and call him Alex or Lex most of the time. TBH I like the name Alexis for a boy, but realistically you're gonna need to build his confidence and give him a good, strong, very male middle name. What does the surname sound like (first letter, and ending letters?)

On a girl I find Alexis trashy.
On a boy I find it exotic. I do prefer Alexei though that I see was mentioned by someone else above.
I agree also with a Guest above that if you go with Alexis to give him a very strong masculine middle name.

I honestly think I would have been more open to the idea of it on a boy before I watched Schitt's Creek and now I very strongly associate it with a very female and feminine character, and I think a lot of people in the US and Canada do as well. What about Alexei or Alexi for a boy? Or just Alex on its own?
Either way - I think it's weird that people are so open to boy names on girls but sooo horrified by girl names on boys. It's a lot of internalized misogyny that a lot of us need to unpack - and I'm including myself in that. So do it, honestly. I find it refreshing.

I love unisex names for boys. I know tons of boys named Avery, Mackenzie, Elliott, Riley, Sawyer, Casey, Kelly, Reese and Finely. It's no big deal. Original boy names will always sound great for boys.
Personally I've never heard Alexis for a boy. I don't care for the name on a girl. I do like Angel for a boy. So handsome
