Devendra useable for a girl? vs. Yes vs. No
So I'm Indian, and Devendra (dehv-END-rah) is an Indian name from the Sanskrit देवेन्द्र, meaning chief of the gods. I've always loved this name - the issue is, it's more often given to boys and I've always thought it sounds much nicer as a girls name. It sounds more feminine than masculine to me. There's been an uptick in gender neutral names being normalized (like James for girls), so I'm wondering if you guys think "Devendra" (nn "Devi") would work for a girl in the US. Thanks :)

I think it works especially since it ends with an A. Devi is a cute nickname too! I don't think people that are not Indian will realize the background of the name. My only concern is if you're around other people with Indian decent and they might question your use. Not sure if that would bother you or not.

I think it depends how closely tied you are with Indian culture. If you spend a lot of time in India or with the Indian community, and unisex names aren't as common there (I don't know if they are), it might be weird. Otherwise, I don't think anybody will bat an eye at Devendra. Just Devi is also nice if you're worried about it.

I think it depends where you live. In the US most people won't know ow the name and with an a ending they will assume it is feminine. I don't know how accepting of bnog in your area.

No. Its masculine, just as James is masculine, and wont sit well on a girl, no matter how many people stamp their feet and say they can.

In my region of the US, I encounter new names pretty often, so I personally wouldn't have a problem with it. But how would it sit with Indian culture and/or Indian culture in the US?
